A couple of years ago, when we traveled around the Maldives with our two small children, we discovered the island of Dhiffushi. A small and very local island characterized by its friendly people, delicious food, pearly white beaches and a turquoise blue sea. After only a few days, we had fallen in love with this magical little island, and we thought we would give others the opportunity to come and visit the beautiful island of Dhiffushi. Our adventure with Air Dhiffushi had begun.
Air Dhiffushi gives you the opportunity to experience the authentic Maldives at a price much lower than the average market price. With help from the local community, we have renovated a guesthouse with four beautiful rooms – only 50 meters from the beach.
Our guesthouse Air Dhiffushi
The guesthouse is called Air Dhiffushi and is centrally located on the island, only 50 meters from a true Maldivian beach with white sandy beaches and a turquoise blue sea – the best beach on the island.
Air Dhiffushi has four rooms – two double rooms and two family rooms with prices ranging from 600 DKK – 1250 DKK per night. All rooms are equipped with air condition, private toilet, a small courtyard and an outdoor shower. All the furniture in the guesthouse is designed in corporation with the local carpenter and produced locally.
In addition to the private courtyards, the guesthouse has two common outdoor areas. In front of the guesthouse you can relax in the lounge area and enjoy some of the books and games that are available. You can also leave your beach toy and snorkel equipment to dry and wash off sand and saltwater under the outdoor shower. Behind the guesthouse, under the biggest Pandan Palm on the island, you will find our canopied dining area, where all meals are served. The spacious common garden is 300 square meters, so we have put up a few hammocks for you to relax in after a long day on the beach. In the guesthouse, you will also find a kitchen equipped with free coffee, tea and mineral water.
We provide breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as snacks during the day and true Maldivian afternoon tea. We always have a range of non-alcoholic beverages refrigerated, and coffee, tea and water is free of charge. The food is mainly traditional Maldivian food prepared by our local chef. For breakfast, you can choose between Maldivian mas huni (flatbread with spicy tuna), an egg of your choice and fruit, or continental breakfast with white bread, butter, marmalade, an egg of your choice and fruit. Lunch and dinner depends on the chef’s mood, but is always inspired by the Maldivian cuisine, which is known for using fish, chicken, greens, herbs, rice and coconut. The prices vary between $2-$15 per meal and can be found in the House Menu. If you have any special food wishes such as lobster, beach barbecue or a birthday cake, please let us know and we will try to accommodate your wishes. We keep a tap of all your meals and drinks during your stay, that you will pay on the last day before you depart the island.
The island Dhiffushi
We think Dhiffushi is something special and we are not the only ones that think so. In 2016 www.guesthouses.mv named Dhiffushi, the best local island to live on as a tourist.
Compared to other Maldivian islands, Dhiffushi is located nearby a range of unique coral reefs, sand banks, deserted islands, the best surf spots, and fishing- and dolphin areas. The location of the island also means that you can get to the capital Malé or the airport in only 35-45 min.
The island is 900 meters long and 200 meters wide. It is covered with palm trees, the roads are made of coral sand and with few exceptions, the island is car-free. There are approximately 1200 residents on the island, whose primary occupation is fishing. The island is safe, and the crime rate so low that the Maldivian police have decided not to permanently reside on the island. The island has its own medical center and pharmacy. The beaches, the playground, the football field, and the school makes Dhiffushi extremely child-friendly. The local community loves children, and the limited amount of traffic makes the island a safe place for children to explore the Maldivian nature.
One of the unique things about the island is the local community and its willingness to cooperate. The different guesthouse owners do not view each other as competitors, but as partners, and the same goes for the rest of the local community. The help each other out, and you can really feel that as a tourist, when you visit the island.
Dhiffushi houses several small grocery stores and souvenir shops. The selection of products may seem modest, but if you have any special wishes, you can always ask our Manager for help. Many products are available in the capital Malé. On Dhiffushi you can only pay with cash, either Maldivian Rufiyaa or American Dollars, but you should remember to withdraw money at the airport or in Malé, as there are no ATMs at the island. At the airport you can only withdraw Maldivian Rufiyaa, so if you need Dollars, you need to get them at a bank in Malé.
The island has three cafes; Cozy Café, Dream Corner View and Faruma, that all serve food, coffee/tea and freshly squeezed juice at low prices. The other guesthouses on the island does also serve food and drinks. At the smaller guesthouses, lunch and dinner should be order well in advance, preferably a few hours in advance, so that they have time to shop for supplies. The biggest guesthouse on the island, Rashu Hiya, serves a buffet every evening for $12 containing both Maldivian and international dishes. At Rashu Hiya you can also find cozy dining seats down by the water.
